It’s one of the first questions we hear from parents and pet owners and it’s one of the most important ones to get right. Is pest control safe for my family? The honest answer is yes, when it’s done correctly by a licensed professional who prioritizes safety at every step of the process.
At American Structural Pest Control West, safety isn’t a checkbox we get to at the end of a job. It shapes every decision we make from the products we choose to the way we apply them to the instructions we leave with you before we walk out the door. That commitment extends to our own technicians as much as it does to your household.
Safety Is the Foundation, Not an Afterthought
Every licensed pest control technician in California is required to complete training and pass state examinations before they can legally apply any pest control product. That licensing process exists for a reason. It ensures that the people handling these products understand not just how to use them but how to use them safely, in the right concentrations, in the right locations and with the right precautions in place.
At ASPCW we take that responsibility seriously. Our technicians follow all product label instructions and comply fully with California state rules and regulations governing pesticide use. The label on a pest control product is not a suggestion. It is a legal document and following it precisely is both a professional obligation and a matter of safety for everyone involved including the technician applying it.
We also make sure our technicians are protected. Proper personal protective equipment, safe handling procedures and adherence to application guidelines keep our team safe on the job. A technician who takes safety seriously for themselves is the same technician who takes it seriously for your family.
Professional Treatment vs. Store-Bought Products: The Safety Case You Might Not Expect
Here’s something that surprises a lot of people. The pest control products available at hardware stores and big box retailers are in many cases more dangerous in practice than what a licensed professional uses, not because the professional-grade products are inherently weaker but because of how store-bought products tend to get used.
When a homeowner picks up an over-the-counter spray or fogger, there’s no training requirement, no license and no state oversight. The instructions on the label are often not read carefully or not followed at all. Products get applied in higher concentrations than recommended. Foggers get set off in spaces that aren’t properly ventilated. Sprays get used in areas where children and pets spend time without any consideration for re-entry timing. More product does not mean more effective and in the hands of someone without training it often just means more exposure.
A licensed technician knows exactly which method and which product to use for each specific pest. A flea treatment requires a very different approach than an ant treatment or a roach treatment. Our technicians are trained to apply each product the way it was designed to be applied, whether that means a targeted bait placement, a broadcast application across floor surfaces or a perimeter treatment outside. The method is chosen based on the pest, the product and what is actually going to work.
We also operate by a simple principle: we will never place material just to place material. If there is no real reason to treat an area, we won’t. Every application we make has a purpose and treating beyond what is necessary serves no one.
What We Do to Keep Your Household Safe
The right method for the right pest
Our technicians are trained in the correct application methods for every pest and product they work with. This means the treatment you receive is not a one-size-fits-all spray down of your home. It is a deliberate, informed application based on what the pest requires and what the product label specifies. That training is what separates a licensed professional from a can of something picked up at the hardware store.
Product selection with your household in mind
The products we use are selected with your household in mind. We take note of any specific sensitivities or concerns you share with us before we begin. If you have a pet with a known sensitivity or a family member with a health condition that may be relevant, telling us ahead of time allows us to factor that into how we approach the service.
Pre-service communication
Before any interior treatment we send you a prep sheet that outlines exactly what needs to be done before we arrive and what to expect after we leave. This isn’t just about making the treatment more effective. It’s about making sure your family is prepared and protected throughout the process.
The Right to Know sheet
Every customer we serve receives what is known as a Right to Know sheet. This is a document required by California state law that lists the pesticides that may be used on your property during the course of our work. It also includes poison control contact information for each county we serve as well as county health department and agricultural commissioner contact numbers.
This information is there for a reason. If a person or pet comes into contact with any material before it is fully dry and safe, knowing who to call immediately can make a real difference. The Poison Control Center for Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties can be reached at (800) 222-1222. We make sure every customer has this information in hand before we begin any work.
Product labels and safety data sheets
Any customer who wants to know more about the specific products being used on their property is welcome to request the product label and safety data sheet for any material we apply. We are happy to provide these to anyone who asks, no questions and no hesitation. Transparency is part of how we operate.
After the Treatment: Following Instructions Makes All the Difference
The post-treatment instructions we provide are not suggestions. They are in place to keep your family safe and under California state law there are specific requirements around re-entry after an interior pest control treatment. All people and pets must vacate the home before interior treatment begins and must not return for a minimum of three hours after the service is complete. This is both state law and ASPCW company policy.
As an additional precaution, ASPCW recommends that pregnant women and newborns remain out of the treated space for a full 24 hours rather than the standard three-hour minimum. This is not a legal requirement but it is our company recommendation and we feel strongly about it. When it comes to the most vulnerable members of your household we would always rather err on the side of caution.
Avoiding cleaning of treated surfaces for the period we specify is equally important. Mopping baseboards or wiping down surfaces too soon removes product before it has a chance to work and can expose whoever is doing the cleaning to product that hasn’t fully dried. Your prep sheet covers all of this and our technicians are always happy to answer questions before they leave.
A Note on Specific Pets
Dogs and cats are generally well-tolerated by the products we use when re-entry instructions are followed. That said we always recommend keeping them off treated surfaces until they are fully dry and washing pet bedding if it was in a treated area.
Birds, reptiles, fish and small mammals like rabbits and guinea pigs can be more sensitive. If you have any of these pets please let us know before your appointment. In some cases we may recommend removing them from the home for a longer period or taking specific precautions with their enclosures.
If a pet does come into contact with any material before it is dry, wash the affected area with soap and water immediately and contact your veterinarian. Your Right to Know sheet includes poison control information that can also be a helpful resource in that situation. We’d rather over-communicate on this than leave anything to chance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the products you use safe around children?
Yes, when applied correctly and when post-treatment instructions are followed. All people including children must be out of the home during interior treatment and must not return for a minimum of three hours after service is complete. Pregnant women and newborns should remain out for a full 24 hours as a precautionary measure. Once surfaces are dry the residual product is not a concern under normal conditions.
Do I need to remove my pets before pest control treatment?
Yes. All pets must vacate the home before interior treatment begins and should not return for at least three hours after treatment is complete. Some pets particularly birds, reptiles and small mammals may need to stay out longer. Please let us know what pets you have when you schedule so we can give you the most accurate guidance for your specific situation.
Are store-bought pest control products safer than professional treatments?
In practice, no. Store-bought products are frequently over-applied or misused because there is no training or oversight involved. Professional treatments are applied using the correct method for the specific pest and product, in precise amounts, by licensed technicians who are trained and legally required to follow safe application practices. The result is less overall product exposure for your family and a more effective outcome.
What is the Right to Know sheet?
The Right to Know sheet is a document required by California state law that we provide to every customer. It lists the pesticides that may be used on your property and includes poison control and county health department contact information. If a person or pet comes into contact with any material before it is safe to do so, this sheet gives you the contacts you need to get immediate guidance. The Poison Control Center number for our service area is (800) 222-1222.
Can I get a copy of the product label or safety data sheet for what you used?
Absolutely. We are happy to provide product labels and safety data sheets to any customer who requests them. Just ask and we will get them to you.
What if my pet or a family member accidentally contacts treated material?
Wash the affected area with soap and water immediately. For pets, contact your veterinarian. For people, contact the Poison Control Center at (800) 222-1222 or seek medical attention if symptoms occur. Your Right to Know sheet has all of this information along with additional contacts specific to your county. This is exactly why we make sure every customer has that sheet before we begin any work.
Questions Before You Book? We’re Happy to Talk It Through.
Safety questions are always welcome and we’d rather answer them before your appointment than leave any uncertainty. Give us a call or send us an email and we’ll walk you through exactly what to expect and how to prepare your household for a safe and effective service.
