The interest in eco-friendly pest control has grown significantly in recent years and we think that’s a genuinely good thing. The South Bay is a coastal community with a strong environmental consciousness and the question of what goes on and around your home matters to a lot of the people we serve. We share that concern.
We also believe in being completely honest about where eco-friendly products currently stand in terms of effectiveness, when we use them, when we don’t and why. This article is our attempt to give you a straight and informed picture of eco pest control products, the ones we have in our lineup, the real-world limitations we’ve observed and where we believe things are headed.
What Makes a Pest Control Product Eco-Friendly?
The term eco-friendly gets applied loosely in a lot of industries and pest control is no exception. In the context of pest management it generally refers to products formulated from natural or plant-derived active ingredients rather than synthetic compounds. These products are designed to be effective against target pests while breaking down more quickly in the environment and presenting a lower risk profile for non-target species including beneficial insects, pets and people.
Common active ingredients in eco-friendly pest control products include essential oils like thyme oil, rosemary oil and clove oil, plant-based compounds and naturally occurring biological agents. These ingredients work by disrupting the nervous systems or biological processes of insects without leaving the long-lasting synthetic residues associated with conventional products.
It’s worth noting that natural does not automatically mean harmless. Even plant-derived products can be harmful if applied incorrectly or in the wrong concentrations. Proper application by a trained and licensed technician matters just as much with eco-friendly products as it does with any other material we use. The label is still a legal document and following it correctly is what makes any product safe.
The Eco-Friendly Products in Our Lineup
At ASPCW we currently carry three eco-friendly products that we use when conditions are right for them. We want to be transparent about what each one does and what it’s designed for.
Ecovenger ER-3
Ecovenger ER-3 is a plant oil-based product formulated for mosquitoes, ants, fleas and ticks. It uses a blend of essential oils as its active ingredients and is designed for outdoor use in situations where a lower-impact option is appropriate. For customers with strong preferences for plant-based materials or for situations where the pest pressure is mild enough to give it a real chance to perform, this is a product we’re happy to reach for.
Essentria IC3
Essentria IC3 is a liquid eco-friendly product used for general pest control covering ants, roaches and spiders. It’s formulated from rosemary oil, geraniol and peppermint oil and is applied as a spray treatment for both interior and exterior use. When pest activity is at a level where an eco product can reasonably address it, Essentria IC3 is our go-to option for general pest situations.
Essentria G IC3
Essentria G IC3 is the granular version of the same formulation, used for the same general pest targets including ants, roaches and spiders. The granular format is particularly useful for perimeter applications and for situations where a broadcast application along the foundation or in landscape beds makes more sense than a liquid spray. Same eco-friendly profile, different delivery method.
Our Honest Take: Where Eco Products Shine and Where They Fall Short
We genuinely love the idea of eco-friendly pest control and we mean that. The environmental values behind these products align with our own and we would use them more if the results were consistently there. But we think our customers deserve honesty over marketing and the honest truth is that eco products have real limitations that affect when and how we can responsibly reach for them.
In most of the pest situations we encounter in the South Bay the infestation or activity level is significant enough that eco products simply don’t get the job done the way our standard materials do. An established German cockroach population or a heavy ant infestation driven by a large Argentine ant super-colony requires a level of efficacy that plant-based products currently can’t reliably deliver. Using an eco product in those situations and having it underperform doesn’t just leave the pest problem unresolved. It wastes the customer’s time and delays the effective treatment they actually need.
Because of this we never lead with eco products as the default offering. When we assess a situation and the pest pressure is mild enough that an eco option has a genuine chance of working, we are absolutely happy to use it and we’ll say so. But we’re not going to recommend something we don’t believe will get the job done just because it sounds better on paper.
How We Stay Current on What’s Available
One of the things we’re most proud of at ASPCW is the relationship we have with our material representative. She is one of the most knowledgeable people in our industry and a genuinely invaluable resource for our team. We learn an enormous amount from her on an ongoing basis and staying current on new products and treatment developments is a direct result of that relationship.
As eco-friendly pest control technology continues to improve, she is the first to let us know when something new is worth taking seriously. The products in this category are advancing and we are actively paying attention. When better formulations become available that can perform at the level our customers need, we will be among the first to incorporate them. That’s not a marketing promise. It’s how we’ve always operated.
Our hope is that eco-friendly options will eventually be effective enough across a wider range of pest situations that they become a much larger part of how we work. We’re genuinely looking forward to that and working toward it. We just aren’t going to pretend we’re there yet.
What This Means for You as a Customer
If eco-friendly pest control is important to you we want you to know that it matters to us too and that we will use it whenever we honestly believe it can do the job. The best thing you can do is let us know your preference when you schedule. We’ll assess the situation, give you a straight assessment of whether an eco option is appropriate for what we’re dealing with and make the recommendation that actually serves your home rather than just checking a box.
What we will never do is use an inferior product just to tell you we used something green. That’s not honest and it’s not good service. What we will always do is stay current on what’s available, keep pushing for better options and be transparent with you about the tradeoffs at every step.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I request eco-friendly products for my service?
Absolutely and we encourage you to let us know if that’s a priority for you. We’ll assess the pest situation honestly and let you know whether an eco-friendly option is appropriate for what we’re dealing with. If the conditions are right for it we’ll use it. If the pest pressure is at a level where we don’t believe an eco product will get the job done we’ll tell you that directly and explain why rather than just defaulting to a standard treatment without discussion.
Are eco-friendly pest control products safe for kids and pets?
Plant-based pest control products generally present a lower risk profile than conventional synthetic products but safe and natural are not the same thing. Even eco-friendly materials need to be applied correctly by a trained technician in the right concentrations and in the right locations. All of our standard post-treatment safety guidelines including re-entry timing still apply regardless of which products are used.
Why don’t pest control companies just use eco products all the time?
Because in many real-world pest situations they don’t perform at the level needed to actually solve the problem. Eco-friendly products tend to break down more quickly, have shorter residual windows and are less effective against established or severe infestations than conventional materials. The goal of pest control is to actually control the pest and recommending a product that won’t achieve that outcome doesn’t serve the customer regardless of how appealing the label sounds.
Are eco-friendly products better for the environment?
Generally yes. Products formulated from plant-derived ingredients typically break down more quickly in the environment, have a lower impact on non-target species and present a reduced risk of accumulating in soil or waterways compared to some conventional synthetic compounds. This is genuinely part of why we’re invested in seeing this category of products improve and why we incorporate them when we can do so responsibly.
Have Questions About What We Use on Your Property?
We’re always happy to talk through the products and methods we use and why. Transparency is something we take seriously and if eco-friendly options are important to you that’s a conversation worth having before we schedule. Give us a call or send us an email and we’ll make sure you feel fully informed going in.
